BOTTOM LINE
Businesses have the power to save the planet.

Tenants control 70 percent of the energy used in office buildings, which means they have tremendous power to keep costs and consumption under control.  McKinstry’s People.Power.Planet challenge helps tenants harness their power to affect behavioral changes that reduce waste, decrease energy, and promote facility comfort and safety.

Start now!

Reduce

  • Turn off the lights when you’re leaving any room for 15 minutes or more and utilize natural daylight when possible.
  • Turn off your computer—and the power strip it’s plugged into—when you leave for the day.
  • Set your computer to go to sleep automatically during short breaks during the day.
  • Think before you print: could this be read or stored online instead?
  • Brighten up your cubicle with plants, which absorb indoor pollution.

Reuse

  • When you must print, do so on both sides of the paper.
  • Use the back side of old documents for faxes, scrap paper, or drafts.
  • Bring your own mug and dishware for those meals you eat at the office.

Recycle

  • Recycle old computer equipment—look for a recycler that has pledged not to export hazardous e-waste.
  • Place recycling bins in accessible, high-traffic areas and provide clear information about what can and cannot be recycled.
